our story

It all started with our melanated girlies

It’s no secret that women of color are often overlooked and underserved by our medical system. But when our founder Necole’s close friends started to get diagnosed with fibroids in their 30s, doctors only presented limited options like birth control, surgeries and hysterectomies to “treat” them—treatments that caused new hormonal imbalances, new symptoms, and new pain. It was a silent epidemic—and she knew we deserved healthier options, so she decided to create one.

Melanated women are

2-3 times

more likely to be deficient in vitamin D—a risk factor for fibroids.

More than

80%

Melanated women will develop uterine fibroids by the age of 50

African-American women are

3 times

more likely to treat their fibroids with a hysterectomy.

Women with heavy flows are

2-3 times

more likely to become anemic from iron deficiency.

It's Not You, It's Your Hormones

The truth is: Long, heavy, painful periods *aren’t* normal. They’re caused by hormonal imbalances—typically estrogen dominance. We love us some estrogen, but too much of a good thing without enough progesterone can lead to PMS, PMDD, PCOS, fibroids and endometriosis. It can even up your risk of infertility, breast cancer and reproductive cancers.
You deserve better, Queen!

HIGH ESTROGEN LOOKS LIKE

  • Long, heavy periods
  • Cramps and bloating
  • Breast tenderness
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety and depression
  • PMS and PMDD
  • PCOS, cysts, fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Infertility
  • Breast cancer

We couldn’t stay silent

Here’s the thing: Popping pain meds, hormonal contraceptives or synthetic hormones could actually make your symptoms worse—but your healthcare providers may not be sharing all the information with you. So, we decided to share it for them: Painful periods and heavy flos are your check-engine light, sis. They tell you what’s happening under the hood. And what’s happening under the hood can be treated holistically with nutritional changes and supplementation. (Enter, My Happy Flo.)

MEET THE FOUNDER

In Necole’s words

Having parents who died at the ages of 41 and 42, and losing all of my grandparents to health-related conditions, I knew I had to break the health curse in my family. I saw what cancer, heart disease, diabetes and fibroids looked like head on. As I held my mom's hand as she took her last few breaths, I realized in that moment that bad nutrition and years of prescription meds were only leading us to an early demise. So, I decided that there had to be a better way.

That was the catalyst for my journey into holistic nutrition, learning to heal through whole foods and vitamins, and eventually launching My Happy Flo. I've made it my life’s calling to prove that we have the power to take our health into our own hands and avoid chronic illnesses by listening to and nourishing our bodies with the right nutrition, lifestyle and supplements—enter, My Happy Flo.

WHY WE MADE MY HAPPY FLO

A love letter to women

My Happy Flo is a love letter to the women who don’t feel heard. The women who don’t feel like their health is important to their doctors. The women who don’t get proper testing and diagnosis. The women who are told that there’s nothing they can do about their fibroids, endometriosis, PCOS, or PMDD.

This is a love letter to the women who have spent decades living in shame because of their heavy flows, inconvenient periods or reproductive disorders. The women who have been called “emotional” or “crazy” without empathy for their hormone cycle. You deserve a peaceful relationship with your body, and a period you don't have to plan your life around. You deserve to be heard. You deserve a better period.
